On Thursday, I attended an event celebrating black men style in Harlem at the Schomburg Library called Dapper to Dope. And after seeing Kanye West and Adidas collaboration downtown, it was a breath of fresh air to see black men with real unique style uptown. To accompany the photos that were shot on the streets of Harlem, was a panel of fashion influencers that included Bevy Smith and the Ledgendary Dapper Dan. So for our next FBNYC INfluencers: Black History Month I would like to introduce a man that many may not know about, and who paved his own way in fashion and took the whole Hip Hop world by storm.
Dapper Dan real name Daniel Day owned a boutique in Harlem in the 80’s and 90’s where he sold a ” streetified-luxury” symbols such as mink, ostrich, crocodile and python altered with his own trademark ‘reappropriatons’ of Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Fendi yardage. His clients ran from Run DMC to LL Cool J. Once the European designers got wind of Dapper Dan they then started to “logo-out” their clothing on the runways, which was never done before. But as his fame and fortune grew they took legal action against him that forced him to go underground.
